PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies, and it’s Smart Spot program, a health and wellness initiative, has awarded the Glens Falls Family YMCA a grant for $2,500 in support of health and wellness programs related to Activate America®, a long-term initiative designed to strengthen and promote the YMCA’s abilities to help more Americans live healthier lives.

Specifically, the grant money will be used to incorporate healthy living components into the YMCA Afterschool Program.

This grant is one of 400 that PepsiCo is allocating to YMCAs around the country, for a total gift of $1 million for 2008.

PepsiCo and the YMCA have a shared commitment to find better ways to help Americans lead healthier lifestyles,” said Mica Wilson, Healthier Lifestyles Marketing, PepsiCo. “Working together, we have tremendous potential to encourage individuals and families across the country to become more physically active and make better nutritional choices.”

Activate America is the YMCA’s response to our nation’s growing health crisis. The YMCA is redefining itself and engaging communities across the country to better support Americans of all ages who are struggling to achieve and maintain well-being of spirit, mind and body. Activate America is making healthy living a reality for millions of Americans by:

  • helping YMCAs to reduce community barriers and increase community supports for healthy living; and

  • helping YMCAs collaborate across public, private and not-for-profit sectors to make an impact on the nation’s health crisis.

Glens Falls Family YMCA AWARDED $10,200 GRANT

FROM JCPENNEY AFTERSCHOOL FUND

FUNDING TO HELP ENGAGE MORE YOUTH DURING AFTERSCHOOL HOURS

CHICAGO, Ill. (7/17/08) – The JCPenney Afterschool Fund has awarded a grant of $10,200 to the Glens Falls Family YMCA to help more children participate in safe, life-enriching afterschool programs.

This gift is one of 340 similar grants being awarded by the JCPenney Afterschool Fund to YMCAs around the country. JCPenney Afterschool Fund’s total national contribution exceeds $3.5 million.

The grant award is specifically targeted to help YMCAs provide financial assistance to youth who are not currently participating in an afterschool program because their families lack the necessary financial resources, or those who are currently participating in a program, but who are at risk of leaving due to lack of funds.

The JCPenney Afterschool Fund is firmly committed to supporting youth-serving organizations like the YMCA that are dedicated to providing safe, meaningful programs during the crucial hours of 3 to 6 p.m., when studies show that youth are at a greater risk of involvement in crime, drug abuse and other destructive behaviors,” says Jodi Gibson, president of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. “By combining resources, we can help reduce the number of unserved youth and ensure that students of all backgrounds and income levels are able to benefit from afterschool programs.”

Complementing the JCPenney Afterschool Fund’s support of the Glens Falls Family YMCA is a separate gift from JCPenney of 18 JCPenney Gift Cards worth $50 each for children receiving financial assistance from the JCPenney Afterschool Fund grant to help with the purchase of school clothing and supplies for the new school year.

The generous support of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund and JCPenney enhances our efforts to serve as many children as possible with meaningful, high-quality afterschool programming,” says Kristen Hamilton, YMCA Director of Development. “They believe, as we do, that children are our greatest asset, and that by working together we can not only keep children safer, but also help provide them with lasting benefits, including healthier lifestyles, improved social skills and an enhanced academic performance.”

Today, with nearly 10,000 child care programs across the country, the nation’s YMCAs are a leading resource for parents looking to find engaging and fun afternoon activities for their children. Most YMCA afterschool programs include elements that promote health and well-being, social skill development, emotional development, artistry, character development, sports and service.

We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities

Stewart’s Holiday Match Press Release Information

The Glens Falls Family YMCA has received a generous grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program for the 2008 Strong Kids Campaign. The Stewart’s Holiday Match Program involves Stewart’s Shops throughout our communities collecting and matching charitable donations from their customers from Thanksgiving until Christmas each year.

The Strong Kids Campaign is the Glens Falls YMCA’s annual fund that supports the YMCA scholarship program.  The scholarship program is the foundation of what the YMCA stands for.   This campaign gives back to the community in the form of scholarships which provide financial assistance for youth, teens, families and individuals who otherwise could not afford fees for membership and programs.

Requests for financial assistance are received almost daily and the YMCA has made it a practice not to turn anyone away from participating in their programs.  Every dollar raised during the campaign goes directly to assist others.

The YMCA is using the Holiday Match funds to award scholarships to children to attend the YMCA Afterschool Club.  The YMCA recently implemented a new program called the C.A.T.C.H. Program (Coordinated Approach to Children’s Health).  This program works in conjunction with the Afterschool program to include nutritional education for youth and games which provide an increased amount of movement and physical activity.  The goals of this program include reduced obesity, increased activity, and promoting overall health in children.

The YMCA strives to teach all children values such as caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.   This grant received from the Stewart’s Holiday Match program to the Strong Kids Campaign helps make these goals a reality for all children regardless of their ability to pay.

The Glens Falls Family YMCA would like to thank Stewart’s Holiday Match program as well as the many community members who donated to this fund in their local Stewart’s shops.
