Background & History

Evidence has shown that the first visitors to Lake Placid were Iroquois Indians who spent summers there. It is likely that the first white visitors were trappers in search of beavers and British soldiers during the French and Indian Wars. The first permanent community in the Lake Placid area was established around the year 1800 and settlement where the Village is currently situated began in 1850.
